Question: What is it that makes the gulping sound in your throat when you drink liquids quickly or eat a bigger bite of food? Is it your throat pushing food or water into your esophagus? Is it the Epiglottis opening and closing? I am a healthy 41 year old male with bad anxiety which makes me notice and wonder things most people don't. I just had my throat checked by my dr who examined me and said I was good/normal but I forgot to ask what makes the gulping sensation/sound in my throat behind and slightly above my Adam's apple when eating food or guzzling water? I have been told this is normal but I still worry.

Brief Answer:
Swallow reflex

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to healthcare magic and thanks for putting up the query
The gulping sound is because of the bolus getting pushed through the superior esophageal sphincter fast. It is a normal phenomenon and you should relax.
Any further questions are always welcome.
Take care
Thanks and regards
