Suggest Treatment For Anxiety, Depression And Hypertension

Question: My mother is 77 years old. Going through enxiety & depression. She has been advised to take 2 tablets of Stablon(12.5) and revotril-0.5mg.. Not too effective. One more tablet is added S-zetalo at night...she is hyper tensive too.taking medicine for that too.
Is it right to take so many combination of medicines...

I can understand your concern for your mother.

Stablon(tianeptine) is used as an antidepressant and anti anxiety drug. It has no significant cardiac side effects as well as without sedation.It is specifically used in elderly population.It may cause sometime reduction in blood pressure(orthostatic hypotension). So it can be used in patients with blood pressure.

Rivotirl is a benzodiazepine. It can cause sedation. However it is very good anti anxiety drug for immediate relief and it does not cause any serious effect on heart/BP.

As she was not improving with above medicines her doctor has added szetalo(escitalopram).It is a drug from SSRI group. It may cause some changes in ECG in heart patients. Its effect on blood pressure varies. On some it may cause hypotension and in some aggravates hypertension.So better to check regularly for BP. However from clinical point of view and according to my experience it is safe drug in patient with hypertension. However my first choice of drug in elder group is sertraline.

No significant interaction is fund out among these medicines.

In conclusion it is ok to give these medicines to your mother.Just keep regular follow up with doctor.
