Suggest Treatment For Ankles Pain

Question: My 4 year old son woke up crying in pain because both of his ankles hurt. He cried and writhed in pain for 20 minutes, then started to calm down, but said they still hurt right before he fell asleep again. I'm concerned because he complained of pain in the center of his chest and on the bottoms of both his feet earlier in the evening. He has also complained of random aches and bone pain over the last 2 weeks. He's had issues with aches and pains over the last couple of years so we had him tested for food allergies, which he has several. For the last four or five months, we changed his diet and have seen improvement in his dry skin patches, and behavior, and aches and pains were 99%gone. But the last couple of weeks the pains and restless behavior are back. But we've never seen him in this much pain before. Can you please help? Thanks

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to growth pain

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for posting your query at HealthCareMagic.

I have gone through the problem in detail. Your son's pain could most likely be due to growth pain, which occurs as the bones get remodelled and increase in size in such a growing age. But to be sure, mixed connective tissue disorders and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis need to be ruled out. The fact that he has got relief on diet change could indicate that he has some amount of autoimmune component (which could be what you refer to as allergy) and hence could be linked to juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

You need not be apprehensive at the moment. Get his blood tested for complete blood count, CRP (C-reactive protein) and ANA (anti nuclear antibody). Unless the results are deranged, there is no cause to be worried.

In the meantime you may give him hot compress or paracetamol in dose 15mg/kg/dose for pain relief.

I hope that helps. Get back with the reports and I would try to help further.
