Question: Recently I dated a man who had been in prison some time ago. He was very loving and giving at first...then started to show signs of anger at me for no apparent reason. He would verbally attack me...usually on the phone but sometimes when we were alone. ( screaming and yelling!!) One time all I did was ask him if he was ok because he looked tired. He said he was ok...I said are you sure?...He then snapped at me for asking him a second time. " If I said I was ok then don't ask me a second time. Anyway, we dated for 6 months and then I told him I couldn't take the verbal abuse any more and ended the relationship. I believe he is suffering from anger and depression......any thoughts on this? thank you!

Brief Answer:
Evaluation by a psychiatrist is needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome here.
I can understand your concerns for this man.
You have mentioned that he is having anger issues and depression. He has abused you verbally.
He had been in prison earlier.

I would like to tell you that such kind of mental health issues are common in prison inmates. There is extensive literature about it. The reason could be past history of some psychiatric disorder, the family history of some mental illness, premorbid personality traits of person or the environment in prison.

If you could psrsuade him to visit a psychiatrist, that would be great for his health. This person needs a psychiatric evaluation just to rule out a possible psychiatric illness.

Hope this helps.
Feel free to ask further.

Thanks.

Thank you for your answer....I agree with you about getting help. Actually he admitted early on in our relationship that he verbally abused me and that maybe he should seek help. I gently agreed with him but he did nothing. I mentioned to him that he had healing to do. He agreed and thanked me for standing by him. I have walked away from the abuse for my own sake! "No Contact" I have done some further research on his behavior in all areas and believe he has a personality disorder. All the signs point to this. Thank you again for your time!

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow-up query.

I appreciate your effort that you read the literature about his symptoms and could reach to some conclusion (personality disorder).

If possible, you should help him. But at the same time emotional and physical security of self is must.

I would be glad if I could help you in any way.

Kindly close the discussion and give your valuable feedback if you have no more queries.

Take care.
