Posted on Thu, 12 Mar 2015
Question: I had two heart stents inserted August 31, 2014 through groin. Was put on 180 grams of Brilinta. November 19, 2014, I was admitted with a hemoglobin of 7and received 1 pint of blood. Also had an Colonoscopy and Upper GI performed to check for bleeds...none found. During this stay, cancer was discovered in lower right lobe, Stage 1. Tentative surgery for lobe removal March 11, 2015. Between Dec. 16 and Dec. 21, I injected myself 2x dly with Lovenax. Had lung biopsy December 22, 2014. December 25, 2014 admitted for pulmonary embolism. Taking Coumadin for this issue. Unsure if relevant to issue at hand. On Feb. 6, 2015, re-admitted with hemoglobin of 6. Received 2 pints of blood. Have NEVER been anemic to this point. Was given camera capsule. A week to get results? As of now, on 75 mg of Plavix and 7 mg of Coumadin. Since stents inserted, I am tired and losing blood.

Brief Answer:
Hematological consultation advisable to rule out other causes of anemia

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details. You seem to have been going through a lot. But let me clarify that a low hemoglobin does not necessarily mean that are bleeding from somewhere (although that is indeed a possibility especially since you are on Coumarins). It can also be due to the red blood cells disintegrating due to some cause or due to reduced production. Anemia of chronic disease and bone marrow depression are known entities that could also have occurred. To identify the cause, it might be preferable to talk to a hematologist. I might be able to help if you can upload the details of your complete blood count.

Let me assure you that there is no possibility of some artery/vein being punctured or pinched during the heart procedures like angioplasty.

Hope that helps.
