Question: Good Evening.

The google searches must stop!

When I was a teenager I took birth control. I was irresponsible and skipped many and never took it at the same time every day. I stopped taking it on my own. Now... about 3-4 years later I have pretty much stopped having periods all together. I was always irregular. I have only had 2 periods this year, last one about 6 months ago. I am affraid something is seriously wrong.

Brief Answer:
The most common reason is polycystic ovary disease.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I appreciate your concerns.

First, I want to clarify that you taking birth control or stopping it is not related the scant periods that you are having.

There are several reasons for this scant period. The most common reason is polycystic ovary disease? Women with polycystic ovary disease are usually overweight and have excessive hair on the body.

The other reasons are hormone imbalances like hyperprolactinemia, thyroid disease, adrenal hormone disorder, etc. It can some times be due to hormone secreting ovarian cyst.

Therefore you fix an appointment with gynecologist for thorough assessment and investigations. Once the cause is found it can definitely be treated.

I hope this is helpful.
If you have further concerns, do write to me.
Best wishes,
Dr Rama
