Suggest Treatment For Allergic Reaction Due To Flomax Intake

Question: Hello, My question has to do with a possible side effect from a medication I am taking, Flomax. I am a 64 year old male. I was in the hospital in late summer for severe lower back pain, which was eventually treated successfully with physical therapy. During my time in the hospital and physical rehab treatment center I had a catheter, actually over a period of over 5 to 6 weeks. One of the hospital physicians put me on Flomax, which I have taken since I developed a urinary tract infection when it was removed and was treated with a sulfa drug of some sort until the infection cleared up. Then, just when I thought I was getting better, my urologist ordered a PSA test which came back exceptionally high at 17. He conducted a biopsy in late November, and the results were negative for cancer, but positive for protatitis. I was again treated with a sulfa drug until I developed a rash; then, about 2 weeks ago I was put on tetracyclin. Ok. So here's my question: for the past several months I have experienced a severe stuffy nose - not related to any flu or cold symptoms, just chronically stuffed up, so severe that I cannot breathe through it at time. Also, at times I wake up at night and feel that my throat is constricted, so that I cannot breathe at all. Then after a moment or two up, I gasp and regain my ability to breathe normally. I suspect that I am having some sort of reaction, perhaps an allergic one, to the Flomax. I will not take it this evening before bed, because I am fearful of having another reaction. And I will consult my GP about it. But the experience of not being able to breathe has happened about 5 times, and now I am quite worried. Do you think I am on the right track? I am otherwise in good health, 5'7", about 140 lbs, exercise regularly, etc., normal to low cholesterol levels., etc. Still working. So that's about it.

Brief answer....FLOMAX seems to be the cause for your problem
Detailed answer....
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have read your query and understand your concern very well.
Your suspicion regarding the suspected allergic reaction to FLOMAX is correct.
Stuffy and running nose is one of the side effects of this medicine ( although less common ) which can also cause throat congestion.
You may stop the medicine and talk to your doctor regarding change of medicine.
You can be given a drug from a different group ( 5alpha reductase inhibitors like DUTASTERIDE or FINASTERIDE ) of anti BPH medicines.
Consult your doctor and discuss about it.
I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
