Suggest Treatment For Alcoholic Hepatitis
Question: My GGTP was 914, SGOT 138 and SGPT 52 Alkaline Phos 139 - was obviously turned down for life insurance - have for last month abstained from alcohol and NSAIDS. What should I do next?

The pattern of elevations of your liver enzymes (SGOT higher than SGPT) makes alcoholic hepatitis the most likely cause of your liver test elevations. I suggest that you stop all alcohol, tylenol and any illegal substances you may have been using immediately. Limiting NSAIDs is a good idea but tylenol is more likely than NSAIDs to cause liver damage.
Next see your doctor for repeat liver tests and also specific tests for hepatitis B and C to make sure that you do not have a viral hepatitis. Your doctor will need to order a liver ultrasound as well to make sure there is no mass in your liver.
If your liver US is normal and hepatitis B and C are negative then it is most likely alcoholic hepatitis (hepatitis just means inflammation of the liver).In most cases these liver enzymes will return to normal if you stop all alcohol intake but it really depends upon how long the liver has been inflamed.
What most often happens is that once you stop all alcohol the liver begins to repair itself and the liver enzymes return to normal.
