Brief Answer:
root canal may be needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

A dental abscess may involve the tooth only, tooth and surrounding tissues or involve mainly the gums.

A periapical abscess starts in the center of the tooth (most common type of dental abscess) , a periodontal abscess starts in the periodontium (lies between the teeth and gum).

Antibiotics alone are not enough to treat the abscess, it is only the initial treatment.

It is quite possible that you may need a root canal, this is very common with periapical abscesses which are the more common abscess.

With the periodontal abscess, the dentist may need to incise and drain the area where it has formed.

If the infection persists despite the above treatment, then the tooth may have to be removed.

Summary: (1)antibiotics only initial treatment, other treatment needed
(2)if periapical abscess would need root canal
(3)if periodontal abscess then incise and drain area
(4)if the infection does not resolve then tooth may need to be removed

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

thank you for your response!

I'm such a worry wart - the tooth is about two away from my front teeth
If I have to have that tooth pulled, I just don't know what I would do - it would really effect my smile

Is there such a thing as a partial plate? Or is there the possibility of a bridge?

I'm crazy - now I'm thinking I may be dentures....LOL

I look forward to hearing from you

Brief Answer:
yes, there are options if tooth removed

Detailed Answer:
HI

Sorry about the late reply

Yes, a partial plate , bridge or dental implant to replace the missing tooth are options.

The bridge or implant are more likely in your case since only one tooth is involved.
Partial plate is normally used if there are multiple spaces.

It is possible that the tooth would respond to treatment and removal would not be needed.

Please feel free to ask anything else
