Brief Answer:
Abscess can't wait....

Detailed Answer:
I am not sure if its the abscess that is present for 3 years. Chronic sinus or fistula can last for 3 years. Alternatively recurring abscess may occur over a period of 3 years.

I understand you aren't comfortable getting it operated right away. But if it is an abscess, it has to be treated at the earliest.

You can however postpone fistula or sinus surgery provided you can maintain personal hygiene and antiseptic measures. If it is indeed sinus / fistula and not an abscess, talk to your surgeon and discuss about antiseptic measures you need to follow while you wait and prepare for surgery.

As far as treating it without surgery, I don't think there is an alternative means. Surgery is the best and the most effective treatment for this kind of problem.

Hope I have answered your questions.
