Suggest Treatment For Abdominal Pain Caused By Diverticulitis

Posted on Mon, 18 Jan 2016
Question: Im a 57 year old female who weighs 160 lbs. Previously diagnosed with diverticulitis but haven't had any trouble in over 5 years. I haven't had a bowel movement in 4 days except for small, hard pellets. Started using natural solutions (Calm and Smooth Move tea). This morning I have concerning abdominal pain, a feeling like I have to have a bowel movement but no results and there is now a mucus discharge. I do think it's a diverticulitis flare up but wonder if I should go to the ER now or give it another day or so to clear up on it's own?

Brief Answer:
ADD FIBRE AND LAXATIVES .

Detailed Answer:
Welcome at HCM
I am Dr Saad Sultan and I will be answering your query. I have gone through your query and being your physician I completely understand your health concerns.
Any other associated problem? like diabetes or hypertension? Are you passing gas?
As far as your history is concerned , in my opinion its not a flare up of diverticulitis. Normally , in diverticulitis there is localized abdominal tenderness and pain which is not present in your case.
All you need is to stay calm and use diet rich in fibre. You can add isphaghol husk to your diet plan .If you are passing flatus < gas> then adding laxatives is a right option like lactulose etc. If constipation is still not relieved you can use glycerine suppositories per rectally it will help you in passing stools.
If there is still absolute constipation < no faeces and no gas> , then go to ER and get the Xray erect abdomen. you attending doctor will devise plan for you.
Meanwhile stay calm .
Get well soon
Hope your query is adequately addressed if you still have any feel free to ask

I am on meds for hypertension. I'm also on the back end of a cold - 9 days out. I was passing some gas and had some bouts with nausea yesterday but that has stopped. The abdominal cramping started this morning and is pretty intense - it comes and goes like contractions. Thanks for your advise given. Let me know if you have any further thoughts.

I really appreciate your follow up..
If I am your attending physician , my suggestions for you to add fibre like isphaghol husk and syrup lactulose 20 ml two times daily after meals.
It will help you get rid of it..
May you get well soon.
Hope it clears your concerns.
