Suggest Treatment For A Skin Rash Despite Taking Prednisone And Vistaril
Question: Father, age 85. He's been fighting a rash that has been treated with predisone, depomedrol inj... the rash disappears, then reappears in approx. a month after treatment. Laundry degergent, dryer sheets all changed. Linens washed, all clothes, jackets.. Stopped drinking coke for awhile, stopped his lininopril for four days & his Lipitor.. thinking medication was creating itchy rash. He's gone to a dermatologist office, PA did see him. Soon after that, he went to a walk in clinic x2. Everyone seems to give the same treatment. (prednisone, ointments, vistaril) He has removed certain foods to no success. I'm wondering if his dog, an austrailian blue heeler could have carried an oil on his body that could create the rash. He no longer has the dog. The truck has been vacuumed... the rash started months ago around his ankles where the dog would lay her head..This is what I'm coming up with????? by elimination XXXXX

I am Dr Asmeet Kaur Sawhney, Dermatologist.
I have gone through your history and understand your concern.
Your father seems to be having endogenous eczema which is caused by internal sensitivity of the individual.
It is not related to the dog and the medicines he's taking.
It has a high tendency for recurrence.
In such cases, I recommend my patients to apply a topical steroid like Clobetasol propionate cream diluted in a moisturizing lotion in the ratio of 1:3 twice daily along with antihistaminic like tablet Cetirizine 10 mg twice daily.
In severe flares short course of oral steroids have to be added.
Besides this ask him to avoid soap, instead use a soap free cleanser, ask him to take bath with lukewarm water instead of hot water, keep his body as much as moisturized as possible, avoid direct contact of woolen clothes with the body, avoid use of heaters which have a tendency to make the skin more dry.
These all measures will reduce the chance of recurrence.
