Question: Hi there,

I recently found a mouse or rat dropping in my kitchen close to my daughters high chair. I am freaking out bc she is constantly crawling around on the floor and putting her hands and toys in her mouth. The other day, I grabbed her toothbrush and I noticed it was a bit wet but didn't think much of it. Then when I looked in the cup where it was held the next day, there was a dry and yellow liquid at the bottom. I am panicking thinking that I might have brushed her teeth with a toothbrush that perhaps a mouse or rat urinated in. What are all the diseases/infections that can be spread through ingesting mouse or rat urine or feces? Are there signs and symptoms or are they asymptomatic? When do they appear? And lastly how do I test for them. I am so upset. My daughter is 14 months old and for the past two days she has been really fussy and rubbing her head. She also puts everything in her mouth sp mu fear is that she my have also eaten a piece of poop she found or put her hands in her mouth after crawling on a floor that a ,mouse or rat was on or defaced on don't know if this is telated. Please help!

Brief Answer:
Look for any symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.
Hi, I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern.

There are many diseases that spreads through rat urine or feces like leptospirosis, but just treating a person prophylactic XXXXXXX is not warranted with such kind of exposure.

Routinely, rabies and tetanus vaccination is warranted if rat bite occurs.

Now, what is required is that you just need to be cautious a little bit, like in case your child develops any fever, jaundice, you need to mention this rat exposure history to your doctor.

A lot of people are daily exposed to rats in daily house holds, but routinely we don't give them any medicine for this purpose.

So, don't worry, just keep in mind, that if your child gets ill in coming weeks, just mention this to your doctor.

Do call pest control services.

This is my personal opinion based on details available here. If you still have any other query, you may please ask me.
Stay Healthy.

Brief Answer:
Could be there

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,

Yes, it can be transmitted to the but crying and rubbing head is not enough symptoms to start treatment.
In any rat-borne diseases or fever is an important symptom.

So, see if she develops that.

Also when you bathe her, please check her whole body for any bite mark.

Best wishes.
