Suggest Treatment For A Painful Lump In The Buttock

default
Posted on Thu, 23 Jun 2016
Question: My husband (71 yo, 5'11", 175 lb, good health) and I are on vacation @ Sandals in the Bahamas. The reason I'm writing: my husband has a painful lump deep inside his left buttox.

Earlier tonight my husband sat down and felt pain but thought there was something wrong with the chair. When we sat down for dinner at a restaurant about an hour later, he again felt the same pain. He realized it must be something wrong with him, so he walked away from the table and palpated the painful area. He felt a lump deep in his buttocks about 1 inch from his anus . He had me come over and feel it. I felt a hard'ish' - (like a tight muscle but it was horizontal), pliable, lump deep in his left buttocks that was about 2+ inches, it didn't feel perfectly round or oval, maybe tubular.. I'm writing because he had me check it again and to me it feels larger now than it did when I first checked it (about 2 hours ago), my husband feels it is about the same size and round.

Other information:
* After dinner he got a cramp in his calf that was so severe he had to get up from the table and walk - the cramp went away quickly (2 - 3 minutes). He rarely get's leg cramps.
* Yesterday (Tuesday) we drove for 2 hours to the airport, checked our bags and walked a long way to our gate, flew 3 1/2 hours (from 1 a.m. PT -Pacific Time - 6 a.m. CT), had a 3 hour layover (sat most of the time) and another 2 1/2 hour flight to the Bahamas.

Is there something we should be concerned about? Should I be checking for something specific?

THANK YOU!

Brief Answer:
An abscess likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The sudden appearance of a painful lump in the buttock is likely to be due to an infection in the area. An abscess needs to be ruled out. You need to look for any gradual increase in size of lump and fever. Doing a hot compress in the area will help in reducing the pain. In case the lump increases in size or he develops fever then do attend an ER otherwise you can wait for a day or two to consult a physician.
I hope this answers your query.

Thank You So Much for your prompt reply!
We will watch for increase in size and/or fever!
We took Scuba Diving lessons today (forgot to mention it) and he just asked if it could have anything to do with this sudden lump?
We'll let you know if anything changes
Take care!!

Brief Answer:
Can be due to scuba diving.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Scuba diving could have caused a local injury and a mild hematoma. Rest and hot compress will help in reducing pain and discomfort.
Hope my answer is helpful.
