Suggest Treatment For A Bruise On The Thumb

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Aug 2017
Question: my son has a skin problem on his thumb. It started a week or so ago, my husband noticed the skin around his thumbnail looked bruised and puffy. Now, it looks split and peeling and bruised. What could this be? He says it doesn't hurt. There was no injury that my son will tell about. It just seems to have occurred out of nowhere. What do you think it could be?I tend to worry and I'm hoping it is not gangrene. Can you tell me what that would look like? Also, he has a well check-up on Friday this week. Can I wait that long to get him looked at?

this photo isn't very clear but its the best I could do. It was when it was wet in the bath. It is more pink when it is wet and seemed more blue and bruised when dry. The skin is peeling away from the nail and a bit of the skin peeled off after the bath. It looks better after the bath, but I still wonder what caused this.the white in the photo is the peeling skin. It is not pussy or bleeding, its just layers of skin peeling off and showing pink smooth skin beneath it.

Brief Answer:
This image is not clear!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for the image.

Unfortunately, this image is not clear and doesn’t allow me to make more comments based on this. However, a gangrene would normally be black and very painful. This is certainly not a gangrene at this time.

Because I have been unable to make a full evaluation, I will suggest that you get his hand examined by a primary care physician. This should not be approached as an emergency but a routine office visit.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.

Brief Answer:
THis area suffered aggression!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The skin around this area has be exposed to harmful substances: Heat, chemicals, etc. This has caused the skin to be dead and now sloughing off. The exposed skin is new and very fragile. I will suggest that he avoid touching or exposing it to harmful chemicals until it gets more mature. This is clearly not gangrene and this requires no further examination at this time. There are also no signs of an active infection.

I wish you well. Keep me posted in the next 48-72hours on the progress. A follow up message would be helpful as well.

I wish you well.

I can't think of how his finger could have been exposed to heat or chemicals and I not have noticed. He does go to daycare, but they always do incident reports for any accident. Could this exposure have happened and he not cry or notice it? Do you have any idea about what type of chemical could have caused this? Are you saying it also may have been a burn?

Thank you for your help and I will keep you posted on the progression.

Hi,

There are many possible contact agents. I am however unable to pinpoint what really happened to him. I can assure you that this healing would be complete and there is no reason to be alarmed and too worried at this time.

Upload further images for review an guidance in 2-3days.

I look forward hearing from you!
