Question: Hi, I am a 27 years old female, with irregular periods,My period started when I was 16. I had normal period for only 2 months, after that it has became irregular , I was having period every 3 to 4 months, but in the last two years I am late about 9 moths! I have been diagnosed with PCOS, which was shown after having hormonal tests with some unbalanced hormon levels plus on the scan showed I have multiple tiny cysts on both ovaries. I am not overweight by the way. My GP told me to take Norethisterone pill every 3 months , 3 times a day for 20 days....is this a solution? he said it wont make growth in the cysts sizes and number. And it will make me to have at least 3 periods in a year. Is this a right solution for me? I am single and not married. I so wish to have reuglar period like other girls.....Please tell me whats the right solution for me to get back to normal? Thanks

Brief Answer:
PCOS

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Welcome to health care magic.

Polycystic ovary is the reason for such irregular periods.

Unfortunately as of now nothing can be done to regularise your periods.

Your doctor has given right advice about having pills in order to get regular periods.

You can have children after marriage. Don't worry about it.

Brief Answer:
progesterone replacement is necessary

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Following is the scientific answer

1. PCOS leads to excessive estrogen hormone in body which is secreteted by many follicles present.

2. This excess estrogen hormone will not be having progesterone which is released only after ovulation.

3. You will not be ovulating due to PCOS and hence no progesterone hormone in body.

4. Progesterone hormone is needed for periods to occur. Since this hormone is not there norethisterone is a progesterone which replaces this deficient hormone in body to get periods.

5. Norethisterone works even if you take for 10 days. 20 days is long. But in some women with severe PCOS 20 days might be necessary hence your doctor advised.
