Suggest Treatment For Molluscum Contagiosum Lesions In Groin Area

Posted on Fri, 13 Nov 2015
Question: Hi doctor, i am writing regarding some lesions/warts/bumps on my groin and penis area. Around 3 months back after sex with my wife, I had a web like deposit on penis which I suspect was yeast infection. But then later I had a couple of bumps which have been there for more than 2 months now. Have also grown in size a little. There is no other symptom or pain and I have been totally well otherwise. 2 of them also look like they have a dot/dimple in center and in one I got little blood coming out from center when pressed (yesterday). Have used tea tree oil since 3 odd weeks, not sure if that caused any irritation. Had visited a urology surgeon 1 week back and he prescribed antibiotic and beta fine cream for 10 days. Then asked to visit dermatologist if it does not heal. Please help me with what condition this is and how can I overcome this.

Brief Answer:
Genital Molluscum contagiosum

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

I have read your query and I have also reviewed the images.

These are lesions of molluscum contagiosum which is a viral infection caused by molluscum contagiosum virus. Genital molluscum is an STD.

Lesions of molluscum usually presents as asymptomatic dome shaped pearly white bumps with a central pit or indentation.

Treatment is either extraction with a fine needle Or removal with a radiofrequency cautery machine.
I suggest that you visit a dermatologist for the neeful.
They wont subside with antibiotics as it is a viral infection.

Regards

Thanks doctor. Is there any medication I can try? If not removed, will it resolve by itself? Also, am worried about this, is it dangerous for me or family?

Brief Answer:
Either cryotherapy or radiofrequency cautery at dermatologist office

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

You need to go to a dermatologist who would either Freeze them with liquid nitrogen spray Or Remove with Radiofrequency Cautery.
There is no approved patient self-administered treatment for molluscum.
They may resolve on its own but they may take a long time to self resolve, if at all. On the other hand, more commonly they may increase in size and number over a period of time therefore it is advisable to get them removed. There is no immediate urgency though because they don't spread that fast. You can wait for a few days till you get your appointment with dermatologist.
You can transmit the infection ONLY through sexual route to your wife. Otherwise it won't spread by non-sexual route.
