Suggest Treatment For Crohn's Disease In A Person With Colon Cancer

default
Posted on Fri, 8 May 2015
Question: Hi,
My elder brother is having Chrons disease and during operation was diagnosed with colon cancer and was treated accordingly. One operation was done 3 years back and then he had same pain a month back and was operated again and he was tested for colon cancer again and was positive, so he is getting treatment for cancer too. The main issue is with strictures in his colon and we wanted to know if there is any treatment available in USA for this and good hospitals. I live in XXXXXXX TX and my brother is in XXXXXXX and I would like to bring him here for the treatment. I would like to know the cost involved apart from the hospitals and information about doctors. His main concern is Chrons disease as eating normal food sometimes troubles him.
I have attached 3 additional reports (Histopathology Report Dt. 22.10.11_Stage 3 Report, Histopathology Report Dt. 13.10.11 (2)_Stage 2 Report and Stage 4 Report). Stage 2 (STAGE II A (PT2, PNo, PMx) )and Stage 3 (AJCC staging - pT3 pN0) reports related to cancer were taken in just a week apart. Stage 2 report was taken on 13.10.2011 and Stage 3 was on 22.10.11
How is it possible that two reports can show two different results? Then Chemotherapy was done and my elder brother started feeling better and doctors were also happy with the treatment. Then after 3 years after Chrons disease related operation he was tested for Colon cancer again and this time the report on 25.02.2015 shows the cancer as Stage 4 (Stage T4 N1 M1). So we are confused with the reports? Is there any treatment available in USA that can cure this cancer once for all?

Thanks,
Thanks,
XXXXX

Brief Answer:
Clinical trial seems the only option for him.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

First of all please note that histopathology report taken on 22.10.11 still stays stage II (IIA). T3N0 is stage IIA. But there is a mistake in 13.10.2011 report as T2N0 is actually stage I. As you have attached only a second page of this report, and there is no information what was tested (which part of intestine), its hard to tell why there is a difference between this two reports. Most likely they have tested two different parts of intestine. Was this reports taken during one surgery?

Now few words about current situation. Your brother is stage IV colon cancer. This is a very hard situation. According to attached CT it is clear that his cancer is advanced with multiple metastases located all over the abdominal cavity (peritoneal metastases). This metastases cause bowels obstruction in multiply areas so surgical treatment is almost impossible.

Nowadays, in USA or in any other place in the world, stage IV colon cancer stays incurable. It is simply way too late. I`m sorry giving you such information, but I have to be hones with you.

The only thing you can do is to find a clinical trial. The most effective tools we have now for metastatic colon cancer are antibodies which selectively destroy cancer cells. Please see this trial: https://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT0000. They do recruit patients in TX. Here is the address:
The University Of XXXXXXX Md XXXXXXX Cancer Center      XXXXXXX XXXXXXX United States, 77030

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
