Question: My mother is blind in her left eye due to glaucoma and both kinds of macular degeneration. She has been receiving injections in her right eye for about two years. She has very little sight left in her right eye. Should she continue to receive the injections? What are the injections for?

Brief Answer:
She needs to continue injections.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

It seems from the history that your mother is having blindness in left eye because of glaucoma and she is having both types of macular degeneration in right eye.

For left eye nothing can be done as it is gone for blindness because of glaucomatous optic atrophy.
Since she is having age related macular degeneration in right eye, the injections she is receiving are for treatment of macular degeneration. The treatment for age related macular degeneration is by injections of anti vascular endothelial growth factors like lucentis....
The injections are essential for preserving the vision she is having. Hence she needs to continue the injections till the wet type of macular degeneration is active. Once the disease goes into inactive phase she can stop them.
Since she is having glaucoma in other eye, evaluation to rule out glaucone in right eye is equally important to prevent vision loss in right eye.
Hence I advice that she should undergo evaluation by measurement of intraocular pressure to rule out glaucoma, as glaucoma is usually seen in both the eyes.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

Thank you

Thank you. My mother also has glaucoma in the right eye. Would your response to continue the injections still be the same? She has both types of macular and glaucoma in the right eye.

Brief Answer:
She neeeds to continue injections.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

Since your mother is having both glaucoma and macular degeneration she needs to continue treatment for both glaucoma and macular degeneration.
The treatment of glaucoma is by use of anti glaucoma eye drops and this needs to be taken continuously without break with regular monitoring of intraocular pressure.
The treatment in macular degeneration is required in active phase characterized by choroidal neovascularization. The treatment is to prevent this neovascularization by use of anti vascular endothelial growth factor injections.
Hence she requires treatment for both now.

Hope I have answered your question and the iformation is helpful to you.
