Posted on Wed, 1 Jul 2015
Question: How long and what dosage do you take of FLUCONAZOLE pills for male yeast infection of the penis? And how long and what dosage do you take of KETOCONAZOLE pills for male yeast infection of the penis? I don't want to provide pictures or nothing like that. I don't want advice on any otc creams I could use instead. I would only like to know just the basic way of treatment for both of the medicines I listed above.

Brief Answer:
Single dose of oral 150 mg fluconazole recommended in penis yeast infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. It appears that you are having a condition named candidial balanitis which is yeast infection of the penis.

2. Fluconazole is recommended as a single oral 150 mg dose for the treatment of candidial balanitis. Research shows that a single 150 mg dose of fluconazole is comparable in efficacy and safety to clotrimazole cream applied topically for 7 days when administered to patients with balanitis.

3. Ketoconazole is not recommended for treatment of candidial balanitis.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

I've used that cream you mentioned. That and others. About as useless as tits on a nun. I've been taking 200mg fluconazole for about 4-5 days. it cleared the infection but I got real stressed today and bad acid reflux and noticed it flared up slightly. I haven't missed a dose yet though. I know it's not always recommended to use ketoconazole but when it is used what's the dosage? And yes I'm sure it's yeast infection. And no I'm not sending pics. And yes I have unprotected sex but the woman I have sex with I'm 100% positive has no sexual diseases. Same goes with me. 100% positive.

Brief Answer:
Ketoconazole used 200 to 400 mg once daily for a week or longer as required

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. The fluconazole 200 mg for 4 to 5 days is overdose. The symptoms might be due to side effects because of regular use. Please discontinue the medicine.

2. The ketoconazole is used at dose of 200 mg to 400 mg once daily for 1 to 2 weeks or more for yeast infections.

3. Since you have taken a 5 day course of medicine therefore please wait and watch. Yeast infections heal slowly and effects of medicine might be seen after some time.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Brief Answer:
Please find details below

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. The fluconazole should be working if you have a yeast infection in the penis. Since you have taken more than the usual dose, the symptoms might be either due to side effects or in a rare possibility is another condition which requires to be confirmed by clinical examination.

2. For any such inflammation in the penis, steroid creams are safe alternatives and the steroid does not cause any side effects since it is locally used if used for a short time.

3. If you are having significant pain and inflammation then another alternative is to take over the counter anti inflammatory oral medicines like ibuprofen. Please note that self medication can be dangerous and if your symptoms are severe then it is always best to consult the doctor.

Hope your query is answered.
