default
Posted on Tue, 7 Jun 2016
Question: Hello,
At 10w1day i have beed diagnosed with syphilis thru my prenatal blood test
I belive it was TPPA false positive but they gave me injection of penicilinG
I had missed miscarige 6 month ago at 8 weeks but back then my blood test was ok (except for thallassmia what I find out im carrier)
I never had any symptoms of syphilis and im with my partner 5 year who doesnt remember having every symptoms of syphilis either.I asked for blood confirmation test and i will know results on saturday.... My partner went to get tested also but his results will be in a 6 days from now.
Now im thinking how much I can trust those tests... If this one will be negative should I continue in treating syphilis ? How bad would it be for the baby if im not infected ?
Now im freeking out that it might be false negative... I read so much about syphylis that i dont know what to think anymore.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Do FTA-ABS test for confirmation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

1) I suggest you to undergo blood test for FTA-ABS to rule out or confirm syphilis. It is most sensitive and specific test.

2) Both of you have to do this test as it may be asymptomatic or clinically silent in most cases. Review with all test reports.

3) It may be FALSE positive due to cross reaction with other past infection. But, FTA-ABS is most reliable. If it is NEGATIVE, then treatment should be stopped.

4) There is no such adverse effect on baby if you are NOT infected actually. Don't be worried much. Given injection is quite safe during pregnancy.

Hope, it helps for your information. Wish your good health and take care.
