Suggest Remedy For Umbilical Hernia Surgery

Question: Had umbellical hernia surgery on Monday. Surgeon said healing looks good today and to come back in 3 weeks. Can I tailgate and drink some beer Saturday? Haven't had any pain meds since Tuesday night. Do I have to worry about bloating or anything? The incision has purple from the glue they used and the incision has a little red where it comes together. Surgeon yesterday said it looked good.

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Umbilical hernia surgery is really not a large one. It usually does not cause any problems at all. The procedure consists of putting few stitches on the small hole in the umbilicus area. In extremely rare cases mesh can be applied. But it is usually not necessary.
So this surgery does not affect your bowels. No special diet is necessary. The only thing you should avoid is lifting heavy objects. Apart from that, you should live your life as before the surgery.
So beer is fine and so is tailgating.
From your description the wound looks fine and the healing process is also fine. As long as there is no swelling, pain and fever, you should not be worried. Little redness is a normal thing.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

He actually did use mesh for the repair. I tell you, the glue they use can be deceiving due to its purple tint. Scared the hell out of me when I first took dressing off! It's not sore. Now, if I twist a certain way I can feel that it's a little tender in that area, but not sore. I assume that's normal. The redness that is located where the incision comes together, is that just a little bit of blood that is underneath the glue. The surgeon had no concerns yesterday, but I always like a second opinion. I'm a wimp!

Detailed Answer:
Tenderness is very normal thing. It can be present a week or two after the surgery. A bit of blood in the incision area is also typical. No need to worry about it. It will go away naturally. You may also try to wash it away with water and soap.
If you want me to give more precise answer about the wound please attach a photo of it.
From your description it sounds fine.

Yes I can see it. It looks good. The verges of the wound are quite protruded but this should become even after few weeks or so.
For sure no need to worry.

Why so protruded ? That normal or just different from person to person? I was a little concerned about what I thought was blood underneath the glue. Thanks for looking at them. I uploaded several. Thanks and have a great weekend doc!

Detailed Answer:
The wound can be protruded depending of the surgical method of stiching. As we know that the wound shrinks after a surgery protrusion should disappear. Blood underneath the glue is very normal thing. No reason to concern.
