Suggest Remedy For Sore Throat And Ear Infection After HIV Exposure

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Nov 2015
Question: Hey I recently had a chance of hiv exposure, unprotected oral but we did use a condom for intercourse. But two weeks later I have sore throat and ear infection, went to doctor but said it was due to a sinus infection. Is it possible that my anxiety is running like crazy or are these symptoms of hiv?

Brief Answer:
Very unlikely to be due to HIV.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting your query.

HIV can present with symptoms of fever , rashes , sore throat, loose motions in the first 1-4 weeks after exposure.

But the question here is whether your symptoms are due to HIV or not. See the possibility of you contacting HIV is extremely less as you had a protected sex . Hence even I assume that your symptoms are due to Sinus infection rather than HIV.

So just relax.

Hope thisn information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask.

Regards.

Thank you so much for your reply, one last question, how accurate are the oraquick hiv tests and how soon can I take one? They say three months but I'm assuming that's a XXXXXXX window period. I guess what I'm asking g is how reliable in your opinion would one be at 4 weeks? Or 6 weeks. I'm just looking for piece of mind! Thanks doc!

Brief Answer:
Won't recommend Oraquick test.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Oraquick uses Oral fluids to detect Antibodies to HIV Virus . The quantity of antibodies is less in oral fluids than in blood . Hence Oraquick tests shall not detect test early in the course of HIV . Hence I shall not recommend that test.

if you want to get tested for HIV go for HIV RNA test, this is the test which can detect HIV as early as 1 week.

Hope this information was useful to you.
