Suggest Remedy For Sore Red Spot Near Penis After Catheter Insertion
Question: My husband has a catheter in because he is having uninary tract problems. There is some rubbing on the end of his penis and he has a small sore caused by this. Is it safe to use an antibiotic topical ointment in this area?
Brief Answer:
What ointment do you have? Can I get an image of this area?
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.
I am so sorry to hear about what your husband is going through. Being unable to control his urine and having these sores is clearly not good news to him. For these, I will do my level best to help you address this.
I will like to know ointment you consider using and get an image for review. And please, tell me how often you change the catheter. I will like to have this information for processing. This way, I can provide a personalized and helpful response to you.
I hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience. I wish your husband well.

Can't photograph because he is at work. But it is only red irritated spot. He thinks it happens when his underwear rubs at that spot. He had the catheter inserted a week ago in ER and has an appointment with urologist in a week. I was thinking of using Bacitracin - an antibacterial cream I have.
Brief Answer:
Bacitracin is good!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this follow up.
Bacitracin is a good option. I will encourage him to get adapted under wears that would not rub on this spot and cause any further irritations as these openings can pave the way to infections developing.
I will recommend the bacitracin as well as recommend adapted underwear for further prevention.
I hope this helps. I wish him well. Thanks and let me know if there is something more you would like me to do for you at this time.
