Question: I am a 50 yr. old hispanic female. I have a history of asthma, MS, seasonal allergies and some IBS. Recently I was told I had bilateral torn tendons in both elbows so they started me on a course of Prednisione...starting with 50mg over a week and then titrating weekly by 10 mg until finished. At the last few days of the 10 mg. I started have trouble breathing and coughing. I went to the Dr. who prescribed a medrol dose pack, a cough syrup and budesonide for my nebulizer. I've always had a problem with tachycardia whenever I'm on steroids. My heart rate while on them will run about 120-140 bpm. However, I have now been off the steroids for about 6 days and have noticed that the tachycardia has not resolved. I went to the ER and they did many blood tests to include thyroid function and also a D Dymer and a lung scan to rule out PE. They also did a chest x-ray which was essentially normal. Everything came out normal except my ECG shows Sinus tachycardia, Probable left atrial enlargement and Inferior infarct old. One Dr. said the ECG is normal, and another told me it wasn't. I'm still continuing with these symptoms of a rapid heart rate and it's quite uncomfortable. My regular meds are Dexilant, Estroven (herbal supplement for menopause) Lisinopril/HCTZ , Celebrex, Tylenol Arthritis, Cymbalta, Vit D3, Breo Inhaler, Albuterol inhaler when necessary, which hasn't been much since I started the Breo, Bentyl (very rarely do I need it) Benadryl when necessary also. Xanax when necesssary. I do not have shortness of breath, chest pain, or weakness. I am however fatigued but wasn't sure if that was from the MS since it's nothing really out of the ordinary that I've been feeling. I'm not sure what could be causing this tachycardia and I'm getting more and more concerned. If you have any ideas or suggestions that would be great. Thank you so much.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.

After reviewing your ECG I would like to say that it's within norm and you shouldn't worry about it. Your ECG is typical for patents suffering from chronic pulmonary disorders (asthma).

If you were my patent I would recommend to do a cardiac ECHO to evaluate right heart function because pulmonary hypertension and cor-pulmonale is a common findings in asthmatic patents.

Meantime, I would recommend to continue with your treatment.
Wish you health!
