Question: I get severe headaches/migraines which can last for days at a time. My doctor is apprised. At what point does one need to seek emergency care for severe headaches/migraines lasting for long periods of time?

Brief Answer:
If you feel exhausted by headaches you should go to ER.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

An ER visit for migraine happens after a long period of severe headache lasting days or weeks. After long time of experiencing severe headache, even with conventional treatment, you may reach the "last straw" and no longer be able to deal with the problem.

So, if you feel "exhausted" by headaches, you should go to ER.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Take care.

Thank you Dr. Spaho.

Is the reason for ER trips here mainly not being able to deal with pain? Or could there be a possibly dangerous underlying cause to severe headaches/migraines that last for days or weeks w/o going away, which hence necessitate an ER trip?

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back and thanks for being on follow up.

Since your Doctor is apprised, I assume that your diagnosis about migraine headaches is right.

However, other reasons that may need an ER evaluation are changes in headaches nature, intensity, distribution of the previously well diagnosed migraines, or, in other words "new headaches".

In conclusion, both, new characteristic headaches and impossibility to deal further with existing migraines, are sufficient reasons to be evaluated to ER.

Hope I helped you.

Greetings.
