Question: Hi doctor, I have been having a very strange pain at the back of my head. I noticed that the back of head has developed a dent, and on some days it feels as if the dent is deeper and on other day it doesn't feel as deep. Some days when I touch it, it has a the feeling of a bruise. Sometimes it is accompanied with a sore feeling that occurs at the center and left sides of the back of my head. I have had an MRI, and all serious illnesses were ruled out. What could it be?

Brief Answer:
Cervical muscles are the most probable reason of the pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Pain at the back of the head is usually caused by cervical spine or cervical muscles issue. The dent you are able to feel is most likely due to tensed muscles so on one day it may be deeper than the other day.
Your pain may be caused by staying long in one position (like in front of the computer or driving car for a long time). If you have any tingling or pain radiating to hands, dizziness, spine disc herniation in the cervical area is the case.

I suggest you to start with physical therapy. Massage, pool swimming or even hot bath and rest should relax muscles and eliminate the pain. If this wont help, you should consult neurologist.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
