default
Posted on Mon, 31 Aug 2015
Question: What is a seizure and how will it affect me? I have a brain tumour (inoperable) treated so far by radiotherapy. Unexpectedly I had a seizure 3 days ago and went to hospital in an ambulance and stayed for 1 night and then came home ( we were visiting realatives 200 miles away) I have been prescribed medication and told to decrease the steroids I had been taking which had kept me awake for the last week.

Brief Answer:
Seizures are due to brain tumour in your case.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms. Seizure is due to brain tumor in your case.

In seizure, abnormal movements (such as jerks, twitching or twisting movements) of arms and legs occur without any control. in many cases, the consciousness is lot. There may be tongue biting and involuntary passage of urine.

Seizures are caused due to a brain disease.

They can be prevented by medications; levetiracetam would do the job in most cases.

If left untreated, seizures can recur, leading to injuries.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Brief Answer:
Warning signs are uncommon.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

Seizures usually occur all of a sudden, without any warning signs.

In some cases, a warning sign (called as aura) may occur, such as abnormal smell, flashes of light, extreme tiredness or fatigue, etc.

Also, measures such as adequate sleep, timely food and minimising stress levels would reduce the chances of getting a seizure.

Best wishes,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
