Brief Answer:
Such episodes usually occur due to certain viral infections

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Cough and cold are frequently caused due to viral infections. Often it is associated with fever. Antibiotics are ineffective in viral infections and irrespective of the use of antibiotics, it usually takes 5-7 days to recover.

Some children are more prone to catching such infections. The propensity however comes down with age. Apart from maintaining proper hygiene and a nutritious diet nothing else needs to be done. Humidified or steam inhalation is however greatly beneficial. Water in the form of vapour enters deep inside the lungs and helps in diluting the cough and thereby provides relief.

You can give some antiallergic like cetirizine once daily for a few days during such episodes. It helps in reducing the allergic component that is generally associated.

Let me know if I could be of further help.

Regards
