Question: Hi, I have a reacurring spot/pimple in my right nostril. Had it for years it comes and goes on its own always in the same place. My ENT says its maybe a blocked or scarred folicle that plays up. Can I do anything to make this stay away for good? I do sometimes pick my nose.

Brief Answer:
Recurrent nasal furunculosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. This is known as recurrent nasal furunculosis.

2. A closeup image would be helpful, otherwise try a local antibiotic such as mupirocin (T-bact).

3. Get a nasal culture to rule out staph bacteria.

4. The furuncle can be excised by a minor surgical procedure including newer options such as radiofrequency and coblation. Antibiotics and medication are required after this.

5. This should settle it for good.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Thank you. Its too far in my nose to get a clear pic. Are these common? Seems to come and go every now and then. Not really a problem but it can be a bit painfull for a couple of days and never really gets bi, then it just seems to go away for another few months. Also hard not to pick at although i know i shouldnt. g

Brief Answer:
Yes, these are common.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Yes, these are common.

2. You can ignore them and avoid picking them.

3. The reason for treating them is that this area of the lower half of the nose and upper lip constitutes what is known as the 'dangerous area of the face'. Severe infection in this area have a propensity to spread easily into the brain via the opthalmic veins (unlike other areas of the face which drain towards the heart below).

4. Hence, unless you have a very virulent infection or a decreased immunity (for example, due to diabetes), there is no risk at present.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
