Question: Hi Doctor, since the past 2 weeks i have been getting severe pain in the joint of my shoulder and arm when i wake up in the morning. Post which if i just swing or rotate my arm, the pain goes away and only reappears next morning when i wake up. I am not sure if i should be worried about this, as the pain does not appear during the day or evening as well. Any thoughts ?

Brief Answer:
Most likely due to compression while sleeping.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Your problem can be due to compression of axillary nerve. This can occur due to hard surface you are sleeping or compression of shoulder in uncomfortable position while sleeping.

Using soft comforters and soft pillows will be helpful for this. Taking Vitamin B12 is good also. Muscle building exercises for shoulder and fore arm muscles is also good.

You should also check your blood routine to rule out any signs of systemic arthritis. ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) will be increased in such case.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.

Thank you doctor for the quick response. I would suspect its a mattress change that has caused this. Will try out a softer one and see if that helps.

Thanks

Yes, in that case mattress can be the reason.
