Question: Hi---just had an ultrasound at quick care b/c am post menopausal two years now with no period or spotting ever and had bright red thin blood with discharge. two weeks ago felt like period type symptoms which haven't had in some time.....pelvic pressure, pain from the vaginal walls while urinating but that went away....have never experienced that before. am 55 y.o, have one son who is 10 now who I gave birth to and nursed....no family background of uterine or ovarian cancer that I know of....but had colon cancer in 2008 and oncologist said I was "cured." had pap in oct 2015---said was fine......had CA 125 which was "normal"---so these symptoms are very wierd for me. CBC completely normal in august 2015 from oncologist watching me from past colon cancer.

Looked up online that bleeding in post menopausal woman is sign of possible cancer? what do you think? blood is not dark but rather bright red and thin.

adding---they found a cyst 5cm? on my right ovary and a cyst or something like that in my cervix as well. said that the cyst was assymmetrical and kind of jaggedish on the edges. doesn't sound good does it?

Brief Answer:
need to evaluate further

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

Bleeding in postmenopausal women definitely needs full evaluation to rule out cancer. But it doesn't turn out to be cancer always.

In your case, as long as these are cysts, possibility of cancer is low but not zero. You will need good gynec examination along with hysteroscopy ( looking inside the uterus) to rule out cancer in cervix or uterus. The ovarian cyst can be followed up if it is simple cyst with normal CA 125. Even if it is 'asymmetrical'. If you can upload the entire report then I can guide you better.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your thoughts here.....I am going to the gynecologist tomorrow and good to hear about using hysteroscopy to rule out cancer. I will see if I can get my doctor to e-mail me her thoughts to give you for yours as well re a follow up tomorrow.

Question I have is if do a hysteroscopy could that make any possible cancer spread? Would a biopsy make things spread as well if there is cancer? Wouldn't it be better to take out the entire area if cancer were a concern?

What are your thoughts about laparoscopy over a traditional surgery and should that surgery be done with a gynecological oncologist over just a regular gynecologist? I read that it's 5x more "successful" with a gynecological oncologist---your thoughts? THanks so much. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
I think you are reading much in advance

Detailed Answer:
Hysteroscopy and biopsy are pretty routine procedures and will not spread cancer, even if it is cancer. To plan cervical or uterine cancer surgery, prior biopsy is required. For ovarian, it is not necessary.

But I don't think you need to plan so much in advance regarding what surgery, by whom, etc. It all depends upon the diagnosis. For gynec malignancy, usually gynec oncosurgeons are the best bet.
