Suggest Remedy For Pain On Penis Tip During Urination

default
Posted on Fri, 7 Aug 2015
Question: I have slight pain at the tip of my penis during urination. No urgency to go, not swollen, no redness. That is my only symptom. I was sexually active about two weeks ago unprotected. I did pee in a cup and everything looked good. No blood, lucacites, protein, etc... It is going out for a culture but in the meantime can you shed some light. I have had this for about two days. Not getting worse, possibly a bit better. Oh, also at times it seems to itch a bit inside my penis where that burning is. Please tell me this is not an STD.

Brief Answer:
possible sexually transmitted infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I know that you do not want to hear this but it sounds like it could be urethritis (an inflammation of the urethra) and this is sometimes caused by a sexually transmitted infection. Chlamydia is the most common cause. Gonorrhea is also a cause but with that you would probably have a discharge like pus from your penis so that is less likely. Chlamydia however can cause just the symptoms you describe. The culture that was sent out hopefully will give you the answer. Until you get results please use a condom if you have sex to avoid spreading the infection.

Thank you for following up so quickly. If it was chlamydia would it clear up without medication? What medication would be prescribed? I know antibiotics, but which one? What else would cause utheritis? Would the same medication be prescribed? Because the doctor prescribed an antibiotic just in cause.

Also, why would my initial urination test come back clean? No white blood, protein, blood, etc.

Brief Answer:
different test

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
A urinalysis looks for a urinary tract infection. Urethritis is an infection or inflammation of the urethra and in that infection the urine may be perfectly clean. Only a specific test for the organisms can determine the cause of urethritis. Gonorrhea and chlamydia are the most common causes of urethritis, both need antibiotic treatment for a cure.
(from Medscape)
Treatment of genitourinary chlamydial infection is clearly indicated when the infection is diagnosed or suspected. The CDC recommends azithromycin and doxycycline as first-line drugs for the treatment of chlamydial infection. Medical treatment with these agents is 95% effective. Second-line drugs (eg, erythromycin, penicillins, and sulfamethoxazole) are less effective and have more adverse effects.
If you do end up being diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection, or if you just want to be safe, then you should also get an HIV test now and again in 3 months to make sure that you are not infected.

Thank you again. If this isn't an STD, what could it be? Could it just go away on its own? As I mentioned, it seems to be a little better today.

Brief Answer:
yes if not STI could resolve on its own

Detailed Answer:
Yes, If the STI testing is negative then it could just be some inflammation of the urethra and could go away on its own. It is good that it is feeling better today

Last question, promise (maybe). Would an STD clear up on its own? Point being, if it clears up can I assume it's not an STF? The results aren't coming back until Tuesday and as I'm sure you noticed I'm a wreck.

Brief Answer:
difficult question

Detailed Answer:
That is a difficult questions because some STIs seem to clear up as far as symptoms but are still present and need treatment. I think it is a good sign that your symptoms are less but I don't think that is a guarantee that it is not sexually transmitted. I don't know how to reassure you, I think you just have to wait for the test results. If it is chlamydia then antibiotics should take care care of it.
I hope it turns out to be nothing and goes away on its own

Dr. Robinson

If it's not an STD and goes away on its own but can it be?

I should mention just so you have all the information that after I had that sexual encounter that I'm concerned about I hadn't ejaculated in over two weeks. When I did it was really strong, powerful and a lot came out. It actually hurt a little coming out. That is the first time I felt this pain.

Brief Answer:
that is normal

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
It is normal to have that type of reaction when you have not had an orgasm and ejaculation in a while. It may be that you just stretched the urethra with the powerful ejaculation and that is the cause of your pain. That is definitely possible. If that is the case it will heal on its own.

Does sulfamethoxazole-TMp antibiotics treat cylmadia?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Kathy Robinson (3 hours later)
Brief Answer:
possibly

Detailed Answer:
It is listed by the CDC as second line and not as effective as zithromax and doxycycline, but it could work. It is usually only used as an alternative if people have allergies to the first line treatments.

How quickly would it work?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Kathy Robinson (47 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
once you have conpleted course

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Once you have completed the course of antibiotics, usually a week, it should be completely treated. Treatment course for zithromax is shorter but for other medications the dose prescribed is usually for a week to ten days
