Question: Hi, my 14 year old son dislocated his pinky finger middle knuckle today jamming it in basketball, went to hospital got xray and Doctor reset it and xray shows it set very well. He is able to dribble and shoot with moderate pain with this evening. He has a game tomorrow and wants to play and is prepared to tape it and play with the pain.
We are continuing to ice to get swelling down. Please let me know how risky this is and what you advise?

Thanks, xxxxxxxxx

Brief Answer:
Risk of a repeat injury to the finger is there.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Welcome to HCM.

Thanks for posting your query.

It is risky to start playing so soon after an injury. There is every chance of a repeat dislocation. In case if playing the match is too important then he can take the risk only after adequately strapping it to the adjacent finger.

I hope this answers your query.

In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.

Wishing you good health.
