Suggest Remedy For Pain And Stiffness In Knee

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: I did a yoga movement class about two months ago and felt fine walking away. The next morning, when I got out of bed, I almost fell down from pain and stiffness in my left knee. When I walk on it for a few minutes, the stiffness subsides, and it has lessened a bit over time, but it still seems affected. I've occasionally had pain in this knee over the years (I carried my son a lot on this side when he was young and had put on weight), but it has always been fleeting. The symptoms weren't like this though. I feel significant tightness on the back of my knee and when I press lightly around the kneecap, I feel a bubbling sensation that is not evident on the right knee. A few days ago, the knee popped a little and felt eased for a while then the stiffness returned. It is usually much worse after sitting or lying down and the pain seems to be radiating to the upper calf muscle at this point. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Can be due to osteoarthritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
There are many causes for pain with swelling in a single knee joint at this age group. Most common cause is Osteo-arthritis of knee joint. But it is advisable to rule out other causes also by taking a Xray of his knee joint. Xray will help us to find out whether his bones are normal or not. If there is no history of trauma or injury to his knee, no history of fever, no swelling in the foot, no other joints involvement then it should be mostly due to age-related wear and tear ie. osteoarthritis. I would suggest you to get yourself clinically examined by your doctor and follow his advise.

For osteoarthritis, weight reduction is the main treatment along with medicines to decrease pain. Right now you can start taking Tablet Tylenol ( Acetaminophen) Double Strength after breakfast and after dinner. It is suggested to add calcium supplements 500mg each twice daily. This will take care of your mild symptoms in 3-5 days.
You can start with walking and aerobic fitness exercises, quadriceps strengthening, patellar tapping, lateral heel wedges, etc- under the guidance of your physiotherapist.
A Big No to Stair case, squatting postures, any chair which has a sitting platform lower than your knees.
Knee brace can also be used for an earlier and prolonged relief.
In severe cases intra articular injections of steroids and hyaluronic acid may be needed after consultation with your orthopaedician.

I hope this answers your query.
