My question is, what is causing his muscle cramps. I have heard it could be an electrolyte imbalance, but he drinks gatorade and a multivitamin. They are getting so severe that he gets lightheaded and they are followed by severe chills.

Sometimes autoimmune disorders such as thyroid disease or rheumatoid arthritis could present this way. I think a physical exam and labwork are indicated.
