Suggest Remedy For Knee Pain After An Injury

default
Posted on Sat, 6 Dec 2014
Question: My husband is 35 years old. He injured his right knee 3 years back. He had a minor fracture which was healed after 2 months. Since then his knee is very weak & he experiences pain while climbing stairs. He loves to play cricket but has not been playing since this injury. Upon consulting orthopedic doctor, he suggested to go for Arthoscopy, as the ligaments were torn out & weak it seems. My husband is a diabetic since 8 years which is rarely under control. Please suggest if he can go for Arthoscopy or any other treatment. Does Arthoscopy requires bed rest? Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to arthritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
After a knee injury, the presence of pain in the knee on climbing stairs is likely to be due to post traumatic arthritis. It can also happen due to a mild decrease in the joint lubricants in the knee joint.
In case there are ant torn or weakened ligaments, these can be detected by an MRI scan of the knee joint. Arthroscopy is not immediately needed. Arthroscopy is a day care procedure and does not need a bed rest.
He can take oral steroids and oral lubricating agents like glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin. Injections - intra- articular are also considered if oral supplements do not help.
Calf and hamstring stretches can be helpful under the guidance of a physiotherapist after the acute pain subsides completely.
Generally we recommended, rest, graded exercises, rest and graded exercises to let you know the right amount of time you can spend on exercise without injuring yourself.
I hope this answers your query.
