Suggest Remedy For Itchy Rashes On The Cheeks

default
Posted on Tue, 20 Jan 2015
Question: Hi,

I get red colored itchy bumps/rashes on my cheeks under the eyes, and on some parts of forehead, when I consulted a skin specialist, he told it is because of UV allergy(he did not make any tests) and prescribed a sunscreen, and EUMOSONE-M cream to remove the rashes.

The rashes go away if I continuously use eumosone-m, but when the cream is not used even for 1 day the rashes re-appear with more vigor. I have recently noticed that sleeping with my face on the bed or covering my head with bedsheet or applying any facewash or soap or shampoo irritates the skin and red puffy rashes form.

Recently I came to know that EUMOSONE-M is a steroid cream and can have bad side affects. I have been using this cream for more than an year now, and when I mentioned to my skin specialist that rashes comeback whenever I stop the cream, he told me to be consistent with the sunscreen and continue.

I wash my face and apply sunscreen every 2 hours. I somehow feel that the actual culprit that is causing the skin allergy has not been found out yet. I am having this condition since almost 2 years.

I have a very bad dandruff problem for which the doctor had prescribed a antidandruff shampoo, but using this shampoo irritates my face when the water flows down the face while taking bath. Also please prescribe a nonallergic facial moisturizer that I can use.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
you are having allergic dermatitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.

I have seen the photograph you have attached. I want to ask you few questions first.
1. Where do you work?
2. Do you have other allergic symptoms like red eyes, sneezing etc.
3. Any family history of allergy?

In my opinion you are having allergic dermatitis because of skin allergy. Allergen can be any from the below mentioned things.
1. Dust
2. Pollens
3. Chemicals
4. Bed sheet material or pillow cover or night clothes Or blanket.
5. Food substances
6. Soap etc.

Since your symptoms are more in bed, I think you should change your bed sheet, pillow cover, night clothes and blanket. Try to use new cotton clothes.
Use soaps containing glycerine.
And no need to worry for long term use of steroid cream. As topical steroids are safer than oral steroids with very less side effects.
Get done Serum IgE level to rule out allergic disease.

I advice you to start anti allergic (leukotriene receptor blocker) and antihistamine combination at night time. And also change your steroid cream to newer more potent topical steroid. Since these all are prescribed drugs, you should consult your dermatologist and then start it.

If by this modification, you are not improve in 15-20 days then we need to search for other causes like
1. Connective tissue diseases ( CTD )
2. Viral skin infection etc.
3. Fungal vesicular infection.

So reply me the answers of above questions, so that I can guide you further.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

Hi XXXXXXX thanks for the answer.

1) I am a software engineer and I work for a software company, so I spend most of my time indoors, I travel to work by bike, and I live in XXXXXXX and there is usually lot of dust and pollution.

2) Yes I do have other allergic symptoms like red eyes, blocked nose and sneezing lot of times. I had few years back consulted a eye specialist when my eye allergies had got very worse (He had mentioned it was because of dust allergy).

3) As far as I know, I don't remember anybody in our family with skin allergies.

From what I have observed the allergies get bad
1) when I do travelling and when I spend time outdoors (especially on long travels).
2) clothes coming in contact when sleeping.
3) and when I apply shampoo/soap.

Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
you are having allergic dermatitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
So , you are having allergic etiology behind this. Better to get done total IgE level. This is another marker for allergic disease.
The first and foremost treatment of allergy is
"Identification of allergen and if possible complete avoidance of it".
So for optimal control , you need to avoid dust and pollution.
Use cotton, new, bed sheet and blanket.
And ask your doctor for combination of anti allergic and antihistamine. This will work best in your case.
other newer treatment options are
1. Anti IgE antibodies
2. Immunotherapy.
Both of these are newer and highly effective treatment for allergy. Very few centers are practising it. So consult your dermatologist and discuss all these.
Also discuss role of newer treatment in your case.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
