Suggest Remedy For Intermittent Knee Pain

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Nov 2015
Question: Experiencing intermittent right knee pain. Sharp. Moderate intensity. Lateral side of knee.
Starting at about noon today, have felt it 2-3 times while squatting down a bit. Once while standing. It’s now 9 pm.
No swelling, redness, other discoloration, or warmth to the touch. Currently no tenderness from gentle probing all over knee and surrounding areas. Very little or no pain at rest.
The problem stems from squatting down at about 10:30 pm last night. As noted in history section below, I’ve been having problems with right leg for nearly 2 years. These days I normally don’t squat more than 90 degrees, which means I normally stop when thighs are parallel to floor. But last night I went a bit further when I squatted to pick something up off the floor. Not sure how much further, but a bit. Certainly not close to a full squat where your butt touches your lower leg.
Felt a deep stretch in knee and surrounding areas, and heard a sound like when you crack your knuckle. No pain during the movement.
Pain/stiffness/soreness started right afterwards. It was mostly from hamstring close to back of knee and back of knee. Mild to moderate intensity. Steady.
Started to feel pain/soreness/stiffness in other areas of the right leg after I woke up this morning. Felt it in inner thigh and medial side of knee. Mild. Stiffness behind knee continued. The most worrisome thing to me is the sharp pain from lateral side of knee.
What do you think the problem is? Should I keep exercising (stationary bike, aqua therapy, stretching, walking, core strengthening, etc.)?
I see my physical therapist again on 11/5, and my doctor on 11/9 (scheduled for psych meds results evaluation and TMJD).

Brief Answer:
Iliotibial band friction syndrome, Lateral meniscus pathology

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

It could be Iliotibial band friction syndrome with possible lateral meniscus pathology.

Pain occurs on the lateral aspect, aggravates when the foot touched the ground and squatting, running. Since there is terminal point pain on squatting, it could be due to lateral meniscus pathology as well.

Kindly upload your MRI films for me to be in a position to comment further in this regard.

Apply ice or warm packs, whichever offers relief.

Avoid doing any activity that brings about the pain.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Regards,

Dr. Aashish Raghu
