Suggest Remedy For Grainy Stools

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Aug 2014
Question: My stools have been very grainy in recent weeks. Often, more than than 2 bowel movements daily, all XXXXXXX or grainy, and very loose. It does not seem like a diarrhea, but very loose. My left side (my stomach) always seems to send small electric shocks or waves (very discomforting) to my left shoulder and head. Gas is also always moving from the left to everywhere inside my stomach. I have had many CT scan, MRI, and X-Rays to no avail. I have even seen an Allergist about 5 months ago. Now, every day, my digestive track (or system) seems to either contracting or creating "pulsations" that kind of hurt, and often that plays negatively with my focus and my mood. Is it possible that my small intestine could have a hole in it, or could be working out of order? That pushing gas that is generated from the left side of my stomach gives me the impression that food never stop to process, and if there's no food, my system is processing something else that I don't know, and that hurts. Help, please.

Brief Answer:
Irritable bowel syndrome

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for posting your concerns in the HCM.
Before coming to the recommendations part, I would want to know whether you have the following investigations done-
1. Routine stool examination
2. Serum TSH, HbA1c
3. Upper and/or lower gi endoscopy
If you have these with you please attach them in your follow up query.
Please also mention the following information-
1. Do you have a history of fever in last 15 days?
2. Do you have any other comorbidity?
3. Have you ever had blood in the stool? Is the stool bulky? Is the stool sticks to the pan and is difficult to flush?
Now, based on the information, I think you may have Irritable bowel syndrome. Causes of malabsorption like Coeliac disease, sprue etc.
Inflammatory bowel disease should also be ruled out.
Hence, you should consult a gastroenterologist too.
For the time being my recommendations are-
1. Fat restricted, high fiber, gluten free small meals at 4 hr intervals.
2. Plenty of oral fluid (3 to 4 lit/day)
3. Daily exercise for at least 30 min.
4. Avoid spices, carbonated beverages and junk foods.
For further information, you please write back to me in the follow up query.
Regards,
Dr. Kaushik
