Suggest Remedy For Frequent Urination And Traces Of Blood In Urine

default

Question: I went to the urgent care this past Friday since i was urinating very frequently ( about every 20 minutes) with a strange odor. I took an at home UTI test prior to the office visit and the results said no nitrates but it did contain high levels of Leukocytes. I had no pain at all. The doctor said my in office urinalysis came out with trace blood cells, but with my results at home and symptoms that i stated, he started me on Cephalexin 500mg 4x/ for 10 days and sent my urinalysis off to the lab and said he would call when the results came in. I started the antibiotic Friday evening. Saturday night i had a back ache on the left side near the bottom of my ribs. Laying down did not help the pain but by the next morning it was gone. Since Sunday I've been very nauseous with a low grade fever off and on throughout each day. My primary care doctor has been closed since Friday. I don't know if the nausea is a side affect of the antibiotic, but I assume not since I also have a fever and decreasing appetite. I've also been extremely fatigued in the past few days. Not sure if I should just let a few more days pass until my treatment of Cephalexin is complete, but it makes me nervous that i have brand new symptoms of nausea, fever, and fatigue . This evening I noticed I'm also suffering from leg pain on both sides, almost like they're trying to fall asleep. Not sure if that's related to this. I retested at home for the UTI yesterday and it still showed leukocytes. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
2 possibilities

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal
I have read your query
I think I can help you.

There are 2 possibilities.

1. The symptoms may be because of spread of urine infection to blood- a condition called sepsis. Ideally in such a case, I would have suggested admission and switched to iv antibiotics and other treatment. Cranberry juice is supportive to treatment of uti. Its not the cure for uti.

2. the symptoms may be the side effects of antibiotics. Ideally I prefer to give ciprofloxacin and nitrofurantoin group of antibiotics. Cefalexin is a second line antibiotics and I usually avoid going there till 1st line fails.

I would suggest urine routine, urine culture and blood culture test. And yes, 2 days of antibiotics is not enough to clear off the uti and so leucocytes will be present in urine.

I have tried to make it as simple as possible. Hope it helps you. Best of luck. Dr Mittal
