Suggest Remedy For Frequent Night Sweats And High BP

default
Posted on Mon, 26 Oct 2015
Question: I want to know if symptoms warrant further medical attention. I have been having frequent night sweats (nearly every night), shaking in my hands (intermittent), high blood pressure (varies between 130/88 and 167/107 with higher readings in the morning usually), occasional sensation of mild pressure in chest and heart pounding, slight dryness in my throat, and frequent low level headache. Went to an urgent care facility 10 days ago. Result was that heart and lungs look good, EKG seemed normal, as did blood panel. I am currently away from home and visiting family in CT. My residence is in WY. Should I find an internal medicine provider to follow up or just focus more on excercise and dietary measures, which I am already doing? A friend has suggested adrenal issues but symptoms don't seem to entirely match up. No fever, no weight loss, no pressure in abdomen. I do have occasional mild sensation of discomfort mid back, which does no appear to be muscular or spinal.

Brief Answer:
I recommend performing some other lab blood tests:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that your symptoms seem to be related to a metabolic disorder.

Your symptomatology is very suggestive of a thyroid dysfunction (hyperthyroidism) .

But, anxiety could also mimic this clinical scenario.

Although your symptoms are not typical of an adrenal gland dysfunction, this disorder can not be excluded based on your symptoms and the performed tests.

I would like to know the blood tests that you have performed.

I would recommend performing some other blood lab tests, besides complete blood count:

- thyroid hormone levels
- cortisol plasma morning and afternoon levels (adrenal gland function)
- aldosteron plasma levels (adrenal gland function)
- PCR, sedimentation rate (inflammation tests)
- blood electrolytes
- fasting glucose
- kidney and liver function test.

Further tests like a thyroid gland ultrasound, followed by a scintigraphy may be need if the thyroid hormone levels result abnormal.

You should discuss with the GP on the above mentioned issues.

If all the above mentioned tests result normal, anxiety would seem to be the main cause of your symptoms.

Meanwhile I would advise some modifications to your lifestyle:

- have a balanced diet (reduce salt and caffeine intake, low fat)
- perform physical activity (walking, aerobics, etc)
- reduce weight, if you are overweight.

These tips will help you maintain a normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels and also help you manage anxiety.

Hope to have been helpful!

Feel free to ask any other questions, whenever you need!

Greetings!

Dr. Iliri
