Posted on Mon, 11 May 2015
Question: I have the stomach flu with excessive diarrhea meaning I went to the bathroom Yesterday over 30 times on my last bathroom trip my body felt like there was nothing left in me and all of a sudden I literally felt that I was draining everything out of me to the point that my body temperature was so high that I felt like my body was an oven sweating profusely and started blacking out. Is that low blood pressure or is it something I should consider going to the doctor for.

Brief Answer:
low blood pressure due to fluid and electrolyte loss

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Low blood pressure is possible because of the fluid and electrolyte loss from the diarrhea.
Fluid loss would also occur via the skin if fever is present.

This is the reason that fluid and electrolyte replacement is the most important aspect of management of vomiting and/or diarrhea.

You can initially try to replace fluids at home, if possible. If you feel very unwell with home management then you can see your doctor.
It would be best to use oral rehydration packets from your local pharmacy or use a sports drink such as gatorade.

Sport drinks contain electrolytes as well.

If you are experiencing nausea, you would use small amounts frequently (eg 1 tsp to 1 tbs every 5 mins initially for 1st hour , then increase amount).
If there is no nausea then you can use larger amounts and increase if tolerated.

Continually drink throughout the day.

Hold off any solid food till there is a 4 hour window with no symptoms

Use probiotics , either in yogurt or plain. These help to shorten the course of diarrhea.

Use medications such as peptobismol or lomotil to slow down the diarrhea.

Summary: (1) fluid and electrolyte replacement
(2)hold off any solid food
(3)probiotics
(4)peptobismol or lomotil

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
