Suggest Remedy For Diabetes Caused By Steroids
Question: My partner has steroid induced diabetes, the steroids were used to reduce swelling following a brain tumour operation. He is now only taking 2 mg a day dexomethosone, with one stigliptin daily and a pre breakfast and early evening 16 mg XXXXXXX mix.
He was released from hospital with a meter and test strips and I tested his sugar levels today, lastly at 1300 when it was 11.00 which is Ok and consistent with his profile currently. I went to check it again pre dinner and pre evening injection but the new box of test strips given to me appear to be contaminated as I gave tried several but I am getting that error message. It is Sunday evening and no pharmacy access to replace them. Is there any other way to check it or should I just administer the 16 mg as prescribed . He says he feels fine

Hello. Thanks for writing to hcm. Noted your concern. Please go ahead and administer the prescribed dose of 16 units. Your blood glucose levels earlier during the day was alright. It would be good to try and fix the meter and the strips in the morning. Urine sugar can be checked but you will need a reagent for that. Some glucometer strips change color based on the glucose levels which can be cross checked against a color code on the strip case. Please see if you can do it. It will give you a fair estimate. If you can't please don't worry. Just administer the insulin as planned. Take care. Regards.
