Question: My wife, 65, had blood drawn today. She has seen many doctors about depression and anxiety. The lab tech called tonight at about 7:00 and said she was concerned because Judy's hemoglobin is really high. Now XXXXXXX is worried about it and wants to know if she should go to the hospital E-room. What does high hemo mean? What symptoms and treatment? Is it dangerous? i don't find much meaningful info on the internet. Should I do something tonight or can it wit until Monday? Thanks in advance. JF

Brief Answer:
Elevated hemoglobin count is due to increased RBC production.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Elevated hemoglobin count is due to increased red blood cell production to compensate low oxygen level in the blood required by the tissues.
It may be due to many reasons like chronic low oxygen level(hypoxia in lung disease),dehydration, blood marrow dysfunction, chronic kidney disease, smoking etc.
It may be an incidental finding. It is usually detected during investigations done for other reasons.
It may cause altered mental function, peripheral cyanosis(blueness in limbs) etc.

This condition need clinical correlation and underlying cause should be treated.
Phlebotomy is done in selected cases.
