Question: Dear Doctor, My son 10 months old, weighs 9kg. Earlier he had cold and wheezing two times and the doctor asked to use Asthalin inhaler for 1 week. Last two times after using Asthalin for 1 week each, he became normal. This time he is having only severe cough and Asthalin is not working even we have give 2 puffs 5 times a day. The doctor now prescribed Montek LC Kid 1 tab daily and Formonide 200 inhaler 1 puff a day. Please let me know whether we can use these medicines or it will have any side effects on infant.

Thanks for your help.

Brief Answer:
These are appropriate medicines and right to be given.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Let me mention that cough and cold in children are usually due to certain viral infections. Some children might be more prone to catching cold than others. Asthalin is a bronchodilator and helps in relieving bronchospasm which is the cause of wheezing. It does not help in relieving the cold in itself. If wheezing is present the frequency of administration of Asthalin should be increased. Montek LC Kid is right to be given along. It is safe and you can use this medicine without any worries. Formonide can be given once or twice daily if the wheezing occurs or intensifies. Given in the inhalational route, it is safe and usually does not cause any side effects. You can give this too without any worries.

Along with all these, I would insist you to give steam inhalation. Just sit with the child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapour will be in the air and the baby will automatically breathe it in. Water vapour will help in diluting the cough and will provide relief.

Let me know if I could be of further assistance.

Thanks Doctor for the reply. Will there be any medicine given for severe cough or only the steam inhalation is enough?

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation and Montek LC Kid are enough

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Steam inhalation is the best medicine in this regard. Alongside Montek LC Kid would be very useful. The others are to be given only as per requirement. No other medicines are required.
