Suggest Remedy For Child Putting Hand In Pubic Area

Question: My 17 months old daughter tends to put her palm in her pubic area, somewhere near the region from where she passes urine. This happens when we change her diapers or leave her without them. We see no rash there and regularly wash, apply diaper rash creams etc and also leave her without them for sometime. Please advise the possible causes and remedies.

Many babies do have such habit and is usually due to following reasons

1. Long duration of wearing diapers
2. Persistent moisture and urine in diaper coming in contact with diaper
3. Subclinical fungal infection

I would suggest the following

1. Give diaper free period of atleast 2 hours a day
2. If possible use diaper only during night, use cotton pants during day
3. Local application of coconut oil or moisturising cream will be helpful
4. If the symptoms persist then application of anti fungal and steroid ointment will be helpful
