Suggest Remedies For Throat Pain

Posted on Thu, 22 Sep 2016
Question: Hi,

The right side of my throat has been hurting for 4 days. It feels like it is one spot very close to where i imagine my ear canal is located. It almost feels like it is near my ear, but i went to a physician's assistant today and she didn't see an infection but mentioned that my nose looked inflamed when she looked in it. Any idea on what this can be? I don't have any other cold symptoms at all and have not lately.

Brief Answer:
Most possible diagnoses with the information I have

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your question.

I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

I don't think it is an ear infection, nor an eusthachian tube infection because the symptoms do not fit.
If you don't have fever then its not a bacterial infection also.

What you are describing seems much like a faringhitis, inflamation of the back of the throat, which in general can be a viral infection and goes away by itself in around 5 days.

Check your throat and see if you can see any white spot. If yes then those can be stones in there. You can do gargles with salt until they go away.

Also, if your nose are blocked, even if you dont have secretions, those secretions fall in the back of your throat, cause irritation and pain. This is called post nasal drip. This can be too.

So these are my thoughts. Let me know which of those diagnoses its most possible, since I can't tell for sure because I have only the information you gave me.
Meanwhile take Ibuprofen for the sore throat as needed, every 6 hours maximum ; do gargles with salt and nose washings with saline water or warm water. I expect you to be better in couple of days and no fever.
If worse or not better, let me know.

Hope this is helpful.
