Posted on Wed, 10 May 2017
Question: My sister has been diagnosed with postnasal drip few months back, she continues to have the problem, probably dripping into lungs, she is on medications and has also undergone multiple tests and scan, with no help. She has lost a considerable amount of weight over the last few months, unable to relate to the postnasal drip. She has undergone CT scans/MRI/Endoscopy so far, on oral medications. Unusual weight loss.

Brief Answer:
Try the following home remedies.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

I understand your concern. Post-nasal drip is not a medical condition, but it may be a symptom of another medical condition that causes excessive mucus production (e.g., sinusitis, rhinitis, or infections), allergies, spicy foods, temperature changes, pregnancy and some medications (birth control pills, blood pressure medications).

A correct diagnosis of the underlying problem is essential to properly treat a patient with post-nasal drip.

You can try the following remedies:
- Avoid foods that are acidic like fatty foods, spicy foods, coffee, tea, soda and other caffeinated beverages, alcohol, chocolates, nuts, citrus fruits and juices, mints, cough drops, breath fresheners, gum, hard candies, and some mouthwashes.
- Multiple small meals.
- Drink plenty of water, this helps thin the mucous.
- Try over the counter antihistamines like cetrizine.
- Steam inhalation.
- Avoid dust, from pillow or bed or cloths.
- Saline nasal drops also help clear the allergies and keep nostrils moist.
- Try antibiotics such as Tab. Azee 500 mg once daily after food for three days.

In case your symptoms persists or worsens it is best to see your ENT specialist for a detailed examination and treatment.

I hope this answered your query.

Brief Answer:
Please upload CT and MRI reports.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Weight loss can be due to various reasons. In your case most probably due to excess mucous leading to post nasal drip can lead to lack of appetite.

Usually loss of weight of more than 10 kgs in 6 months, cancer should be ruled out. Conditions like laryngeal cancer can present with same symptoms as your sister is having. I think the CT and MRI would have ruled out cancer.

Other conditions such as Thyroid disorders, Tuberculosis or Pneumonia can also lead to weight loss. I think all this has been ruled out by your treating doctor.

I would get a better idea if you could upload the images of CT and MRI reports and also the medications she is taking.

I hope this answered your query.
