Suggest Remedies For Low Grade Fever

Posted on Thu, 25 Aug 2016
Question: Hello! Last Sunday (7/24) I felt somewhat disoriented and achy. I checked my temperature and found that I had a low grade fever of 99.0 or so. The fever went away by Monday, but then I got a terrible headache on Monday afternoon and on Tuesday still had a headache and felt disoriented again. Through the past week, I have struggled off and on with feeling headache and disorientation, but each day I have felt a little bit better. Today my headache is almost completely gone, but I have a fever that I've had since Saturday (still very low-grade, around 99.2 average and highest is 99.6). I also feel almost back to normal. I just want to make sure I don't need to go in and see a doctor, since I do seem to be getting better each day. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Continue current line of action

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Judging by that description I would agree with your current line of thinking. Your symptoms would be justified by a viral infection. The fact that you are steadily improving means that probably your immune system is countering it successfully.

So for now I would continue with the vitamin C and drinking fluids. Only if symptoms worsen, with increase in headache or in temperature you should see a doctor. Also if that low grade fever persists for several weeks you should still see a doctor for the possibility of a chronic infection.

I hope you'll be back to normal soon.

Hi! Thanks for your helpful reply. I wanted to ask a quick follow up question: I had been doing much better and felt normal yesterday (Wednesday). I decided to cook some Chinese food with deep fried chow mein noodles. After I ate, I suddenly started to feel like I did last week, instead of feeling back to normal (as I did on Tuesday and Wednesday).

My headache did not come back, but I felt disoriented again. Today, I feel better than I felt last night, but I'm frustrated because don't feel completely normal, as I did on Wednesday. It seems silly to ask, but could my meal have triggered this regression?

Thank you very much for your help!

Brief Answer:
Possible but unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

Technically yes, it is possible to pick up gastrointestinal viruses through food, actually it is common, though unlikely for that to happen twice in such a short time.
Food allergies may also be a cause, however cannot be judged by a single episode, should pay attention to what you eat, perhaps even keep a food diary, so that if it repeats itself try to identify a common ingredient of the dish which could be responsible.
It is too little to draw conclusions for now I would say, may simply be a coincidence, time will tell.

Wishing you good health.
